Orwil Street Community House

Happy women doing a meditation

Women’s Wellbeing Program

Orwil Street Community House, a neighbourhood house, has been an integral part of Frankston for 40 years. Known for fostering a sense of belonging among its community peers, Orwil Street is a safe and trusted resource offering expert assistance, referrals and support for various community members, including those experiencing homelessness, vulnerability or economic disadvantage.

The Women’s Wellbeing Program aims to enhance mental health and combat disadvantage through yoga, self-care and confidence workshops, leading to a significant increase in female participation at the house. This program offers skill development, particularly for homeless or at-risk women, using trauma-sensitive yoga practices.

Using Yoga to support women

Research indicates that yoga can help people re-learn self-regulation and integrate traumatic experiences with simple actions that “deeply and viscerally” counter feelings of helplessness, rage, or collapse, as stated by Bessel Van Der Kolk.

The weekly two-hour program, based on trauma-informed care principles, fosters an environment where women gain insights and start feeling their body is a safe space. It encourages living in the present moment, aligning with inner and outer life rhythms and provides tools for self-regulation.

Jo Ridgeway is a community change maker, working locally for 25 years. People are at the heart of everything she does, and she supports them in achieving their dreams and visions. Prior to taking part in Trauma Sensitive Yoga for Anxiety or Depression, Jo will evaluate the community member with induction baseline information and seek any Health clearance as agreed by the community member.
