Yarrawarra Women’s Yoga Retreat

The Yarrawarra Retreat Centre, meaning “Happy Meeting Place” in Gumbaynggirr, is an ideal setting for women’s yoga gatherings in Corindi Beach, NSW. Established in 1987 by Gumbaynggirr Elders, the centre is an Aboriginal cultural, conference and accommodation hub. It is proudly owned and operated by Aboriginal people on a not-for-profit basis.

Over five days, yoga teachers and natural therapy healers Leerah Stone and Melina Murphy led women through a transformative experience in the bushland of North Coffs Harbour.

The retreat provided an opportunity to explore creativity, healing, music, yoga, weaving, bushwalking and gourmet cuisine, culminating in a rejuvenating journey that left participants feeling refreshed and replenished.

Organisers noted various highlights, including Bob’s culinary skills in the Bush Tucker kitchen. While participants enjoyed his sweet baking, moderation was necessary due to health considerations. Despite the tempting catering, attendees managed to indulge without adding extra weight.

Finding joy and connection

Weaving and basketry under the shade of the big gums is a joyful activity offered at the centre. Gumbaynggirr weaver Lilly Clegg shares the magic of natural weaving, connecting participants to their ancestors and each other. She reflects, “There’s magic in gathering in nature to create. No matter where you come from in the world, we all have ancestors who sat together under the trees and wove baskets, and this is something that connects us to them and to each other. In this space, we begin to remember, and it feels so right.”

Weaving captivated women during the retreat, healing the spirit and contributing to a rejuvenating journey that left everyone refreshed and replenished.

“It was a total blessing to organise and be part of this retreat. Deep gratitude goes out to Yoga For Good for supporting us to make this happen.” – Leerah Stone
