Cancer Council WA

Life Now program

Cancer Council WA believes that no one should have to face cancer alone, and they are the only cancer charity that focuses on all types of cancer.

Nearly half of Australians are diagnosed with cancer by age 85, and every day, 36 West Australians receive a cancer diagnosis. Cancer Council WA helps over 32,000 people across the state annually, aiming to diminish the incidence and impact of cancer through cutting-edge research, public health promotion, policy advocacy and community-funded support services.

Community donations enable Cancer Council WA’s Cancer Information and Support Services Division, while the YFG Grant supports expanding their ‘Life Now’ program to new locations.

A program for West Australians impacted by a cancer diagnosis and their primary carers

For 15 years, free yoga and meditation classes have strengthened those impacted by cancer. The YFG Grant will make the following enhancements possible:

  • Launching a new yoga course in Broome, making yoga’s benefits accessible to those living with cancer in remote WA.
  • The purchase of new equipment for safer yoga practice during various stages of cancer treatment and recovery.
  • Revising and standardising the meditation program, creating fresh material for sustained participant enjoyment.

The Broome Yoga and meditation classes quickly reached capacity with 12-15 attendees, including cancer patients and their carers from all over the Kimberley region. New equipment has been utilised in Shenton Park and Albany and will remain available for future sessions.

The new Meditation course promises benefits for all participants, averaging around 100 attendees annually. Cancer Council WA hosts 14 Yoga and 11 Meditation courses across Western Australia each year, consistently in high demand and well-received. The introduction of online courses during the pandemic has made involvement easier for people living remotely.

“We have successfully achieved all three of the objectives that we aimed to accomplish with support from the Yoga for Good Foundation. These have included: running our inaugural Life Now Yoga course in Broome; purchasing yoga blocks, bolsters, and belts to integrate into our Life Now Yoga courses; and conducting a review of our Life Now Meditation program, to produce new, standardised materials for our practitioners to use. Participant feedback has been incredibly positive, and we are so grateful to Yoga for Good Foundation for making this possible.”
