Breath Circle, founded by Beata Heymann in 2019, offers evidence-based techniques to help children manage stress, regulate emotions and alleviate anxiety. Operating primarily in culturally diverse or remote communities, they’ve partnered with 41 schools across Australia. Beata, with over 12 years of experience in Melbourne’s youth sector, specialises in youth mindfulness programs and serves as a Teachers’ Trainer in Youth Yoga. Breath Circle collaborates with Western Sydney University, Cool Australia and the Australian Yoga Academy.
With help from a YFG Grant, Breath Circle delivered programs to young people and their families in the Atherton Gardens Estate, African Community in the Yarra area of Melbourne. Their programs share 3 tools – mindful breath, mindful movement and mindful sound and integrate positive mental health strategies.
Breath Circle tailors services to the needs of families and community goals, partnering with schools, educators and parents to address unique challenges. The whole community offers input, which informs ongoing program adaptation and evaluation.
Our primary trauma-informed self-regulation tool is mindful breathing. It enhances oxygen flow to the brain, links the body with the environment, and conveys calm to the nervous system, fostering clarity and presence.
This project addresses the pressing issue of compromised youth mental health in the Yarra community due to lockdowns. It is an early intervention to mitigate future harm, given the alarming rise in anxiety, depression and youth suicide rates.
The African girls & mums Yoga program initially held three sessions at Yarra Youth Centre, Fitzroy, as part of the African Festival celebration. The program was well-received, benefiting from the festival’s attendance. However, sustaining good attendance at Yarra Youth Centre without a regular school-based program proved challenging, prompting a shift to Abbotsford Primary’s yoga program.
Beata ensured increased participation and backing for a Yoga Program at Abbotsford Primary in Term 1, 2024. The program attracted 15-25 youths per session, primarily Africans, with some Vietnamese and Australian participants. The children enthusiastically embraced the yoga and breathing exercises, thoroughly enjoying the experience.
Beata appreciates our support and has plans for future projects. She aims to develop digital resources, such as audio and video recordings, to enable young people to access breathing techniques and mindful movement from home. This initiative would cater to the African girls and mothers’ community, facilitating practice from home and overcoming attendance barriers. Additionally, these resources would be shared with Grade 2 and Grade 6 students at Abbotsford Primary.
