Yoga For Good supports opportunities for Yoga & Meditation

Did you know that the worldwide yoga industry is expecting an annual growth rate of 9.4% and the global market size is $338bn?

Here in Australia, the yoga studio industry showed a recent decline, although the expansion of different types of yoga classes and Pilates, retreats and yoga accessories continues the long-held surge of interest in health and fitness, and it is set to grow in 2025.

It is estimated that 5% of Australians practice yoga and 10% practice meditation. The Yoga For Good Foundation aims to expand opportunities for more people to experience the benefits of yoga and meditation. We support many initiatives through grants for activities that ripple out into the community and actively encourage innovative teaching of these time-tested practices.

Why we value yoga

An interest in yoga and meditation significantly enhances stress management, offering therapeutic benefits that resonate throughout society. The burgeoning trend of yoga retreats is transforming the global yoga tourism landscape, projected to soon soar to an impressive $182.5 billion. At YFG, we host an annual retreat designed to immerse participants in our established, practical yoga teachings at accessible prices. Furthermore, we are dedicated to empowering fellow yogis by providing grants to support their own retreats.

Surveys reveal that the typical adult yoga participant is a female aged between 25 and 55, making up an overwhelming 65% of Australia’s 1.4 million yoga practitioners. This demographic illustrates a remarkable commitment to the practice, with students often matching their instructors’ devotion to continuous development and education. Such dedication elevates the value of the entire yoga business.

In Australia, the average yoga provider operates as a part-time solo entrepreneur with over a decade of experience, blending professional qualifications with integration into healthcare practices. With more than 40 years of yoga teacher training available in the country, we have a deep reservoir of expertise driving the spread of yoga. At YFG, we passionately encourage yoga teachers to seek opportunities that enrich the lives of others—whether by applying for a grant or teaching a community class for our library. Together, we are building a vibrant community grounded in shared growth and holistic wellbeing.

What yoga can do

Yoga can assist with many health issues and medical conditions, and the longer you practice, the more likely you are to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Special provisions can be made for those who aren’t able to attend a face-to-face yoga class or benefit from an online class, with a niche program tailored to specific needs. For example, programs can help break down social isolation, support children dealing with ADHD, anxiety and autism, or aid in community trauma recovery.

Barriers to practicing yoga for health and education can be overcome with the support of a YFG Grant. We fund yoga classes for specific purposes, enabling experienced yoga and meditation providers to address the lesser-known benefits of yoga. Programs such as trauma-informed yoga, community outreach yoga, and yoga for therapy and healing can be delivered in a range of settings.

The lesser-known benefits of yoga can be promoted across all age groups and life stages, making it accessible in different circumstances. Creating the right conditions is key to expanding its reach to younger and older individuals, as well as people of all genders.

The nature of yoga and meditation

Yoga can be an intervention in health programs and incarceration settings, contributing to positive outcomes. It also naturally supports the psychotherapy field. Yoga infrastructure can be strengthened through new technology platforms, research and education—projects that YFG actively supports.

The power of yoga to unite communities is an under-represented force in our increasingly isolated world. YFG is a champion for this cause. We believe that while yoga is an individual pursuit, it fosters a sense of belonging and security. It is essential for society as a whole and helps each of us lead a more compassionate and inspired life.
